M. K. Stalin is the President of the DMK and Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu since 2021. The son of M. Karunanidhi, he rose through the party over five decades, serving as Chennai's first directly elected Mayor and as Deputy Chief Minister before leading the DMK to power.

Detailed Biography

Born in 1953 in Madras, Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin was active in the DMK from his youth and was imprisoned under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act during the Emergency. He served as Mayor of Chennai from 1996, becoming the city's first directly elected mayor, and later as a minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He led the party's youth wing for many years and became DMK president in 2018 after his father's death. He led the DMK and its alliance to victory in the 2021 Assembly election and became Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, launching welfare schemes such as the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thittam and the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme.
