M. Karunanidhi, known as Kalaignar, was a five-term Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and led the DMK for nearly five decades. A prolific writer, screenwriter and poet, he combined mass political leadership with a lifelong devotion to the Tamil language.

Born in 1924 in Thirukkuvalai, Karunanidhi entered the Dravidian movement as a teenager and made his name as a screenwriter whose films carried Dravidian ideals to a wide audience. A founding member of the DMK in 1949, he rose through the party and became Chief Minister in 1969 following Annadurai's death. He went on to serve as Chief Minister five times across five decades, and led the DMK as its president from 1969 until his death in 2018. His governments were known for welfare schemes, social-justice measures and steps to promote Tamil language and culture. As a writer he produced poems, plays, essays, screenplays and the multi-volume memoir Nenjukku Neethi, and remained the dominant figure in Tamil Nadu politics for half a century.
