DMK president M.K. Stalin questioned the propriety of appointing the Villupuram District Collector as the new Secretary of the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission, characterizing the transfer as a reward for partisan service during the recent Vikravandi assembly by-election. Stalin asked whether this sudden administrative maneuver was engineered to indefinitely delay local body elections or to facilitate systematic electoral malpractice by the ruling AIADMK during the forthcoming civic polls.
Stalin noted that independent constitutional and statutory election bodies must function with unimpeachable neutrality and administrative autonomy to preserve public confidence in democratic processes. Transferring compliant executive officers to oversee municipal and panchayat elections creates widespread suspicion regarding institutional collusion between the ruling establishment and the election machinery. The state administration has consistently demonstrated reluctance to conduct transparent local body polls, resorting to endless delays and legal subterfuges.
The opposition leader demanded that the State Election Commission demonstrate total impartiality in executing its statutory obligations. Stalin warned that the DMK will closely monitor election preparations and challenge any administrative irregularities in appropriate judicial forums to protect democratic rights across local self-governance institutions.
