If reports about political leaders' phones having been under illegal surveillance are true, then the Union Government owes an explanation to the country.

The Government must also launch a fair inquiry guided by the Supreme Court's ruling on the right to privacy #WhatsAppSpygate

Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin demanded that the Union Government provide a transparent explanation to the nation regarding credible reports indicating that Indian political leaders, journalists, and civil rights activists had been subjected to unauthorized digital surveillance. Referring to revelations concerning military-grade spyware deployed through WhatsApp messaging platforms, Stalin stated that unlawful snooping strikes at the heart of constitutional democracy and individual liberty.

Stalin emphasized that the central administration must immediately initiate an impartial, high-level inquiry guided strictly by the landmark Supreme Court ruling establishing privacy as an inalienable fundamental right under Article 21. If state agencies or unauthorized foreign entities infiltrated citizens' personal devices without statutory sanction, it constitutes a monumental breach of national security and democratic norms. A free democratic society cannot tolerate secret electronic espionage aimed at intimidating political opponents and stifling public dissent.

The DMK leader called upon central authorities to disclose whether government departments procured or deployed controversial spyware tools against Indian nationals. Stalin asserted that democratic accountability demands full judicial oversight to protect citizens' digital privacy and constitutional rights against unchecked executive overreach, state surveillance, and authoritarian political intimidation.
