DMK president M.K. Stalin criticized the Tamil Nadu Transport Department for failing to shield festive travelers from extortionate bus fares during the Deepavali travel rush. Stalin remarked that citizens attempting to visit their native villages were pushed into severe distress by unchecked highway robbery permitted under the AIADMK regime. Private bus operators arbitrarily inflated ticket prices up to four times normal rates, creating unbearable financial hardship for ordinary citizens, migrant workers, and students.
Stalin noted that despite widespread public outrage and recurring festive travel gouging, the state transport department remained completely passive. Rather than deploying dedicated inspection squads and regulating ticket counters across major boarding terminals, the state administration allowed private fleets to exploit vulnerable holiday commuters with total impunity. Stalin pointed out that public transportation exists to facilitate citizen mobility, yet state authorities failed to run sufficient special services to meet surging transit demand.
The opposition leader called upon the transport minister and senior transport officials to rein in unregulated private omnibus operators immediately. He insisted that transparent fare regulation, rigorous vehicle inspections, and accessible public transit constitute basic governance duties that cannot be abandoned.
