Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin raised serious concerns regarding the deteriorating law and order situation across Tamil Nadu, citing official data released by the National Crime Records Bureau. Stalin highlighted that the national report placed Tamil Nadu sixth nationwide with 1,613 recorded homicides, while Chennai ranked fourth among metropolitan cities after recording 162 murders. He asserted that these alarming statistics demolish the AIADMK administration's claims of presiding over a tranquil, well-administered state.

Stalin questioned whether Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, who holds the home portfolio, will finally allow the state police department to operate independently without partisan executive interference. He noted that political subservience imposed upon police officers by ruling party politicians has crippled basic crime prevention and law enforcement capabilities. When law enforcement agencies are utilized primarily to harass political rivals and silence democratic dissent, criminal networks operate with brazen impunity.

The opposition leader demanded immediate administrative reforms to depoliticize the police department and restore public safety. He insisted that ensuring unbiased policing, prompt crime detection, and institutional accountability remains paramount to protecting the lives and liberties of Tamil Nadu citizens.
