DMK president M.K. Stalin demanded an immediate and transparent clarification from Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami regarding media reports concerning the release of seven life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, including A.G. Perarivalan. Reports indicated that Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit had informed the Chief Minister of his inability to accept the unanimous cabinet resolution passed under Article 161 of the Constitution recommending their premature release. Stalin asserted that the state government cannot maintain secretive silence on this vital humanitarian issue.
Stalin recalled that the state cabinet had adopted the formal resolution recommending the release of all seven convicts following clear legal observations made by the Supreme Court of India. Over a year had elapsed without the Governor acting on the cabinet advice, raising severe constitutional questions regarding executive autonomy. If the Governor had indeed communicated a rejection to the Chief Minister, keeping the public and legislature in the dark represents a grave breach of administrative accountability.
The DMK leader urged the Chief Minister to place all official communications on record and explain what legal recourse the state government intends to pursue. Protecting state cabinet prerogatives remains crucial.
