DMK president M.K. Stalin demanded that the central government summarily reject the detailed explanatory report submitted by the Karnataka government seeking permission to construct a new reservoir across the Cauvery river at Mekedatu. Stalin asserted that building any unauthorized structure in the Cauvery basin directly violates the final binding verdict of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal as well as the judgment delivered by the Supreme Court of India. He stressed that constructing the dam would severely obstruct the natural flow of water into downstream Tamil Nadu, devastating the livelihoods of delta farmers.
Stalin also made a direct appeal to the Chief Minister of Karnataka to abandon the contentious project completely, emphasizing that preserving mutual goodwill and peaceful interstate relations between the peoples of both neighboring states should take precedence over unilateral river development plans. He criticized the Tamil Nadu state administration for failing to mount an effective diplomatic and legal resistance against Karnataka's persistent moves.
The DMK leader reiterated that the DMK will persistently defend the riparian rights of Tamil Nadu, warning that any attempt to compromise Cauvery waters will meet fierce democratic resistance.
