Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin voiced strong condemnation over the filing of a criminal sedition case against eminent historian Ramachandra Guha, acclaimed film director Mani Ratnam, actress Revathi, and forty-six other distinguished artists and intellectuals. The case had been registered after they addressed an open letter to the Prime Minister expressing grave concern over rising mob lynching incidents and religious intolerance in India. Stalin stated that branding socially responsible creative figures and scholars as traitors constitutes a severe peril to constitutional democracy.

Stalin asserted that the right to peaceful dissent and constructive criticism represents the very lifeblood of a vibrant democratic society. He emphasized that throughout modern history, rulers who adopted authoritarian measures to stifle critical public voices inevitably suffered crushing democratic defeats before the collective will of the people. Stalin criticized the ruling establishment for weaponizing obsolete colonial-era sedition statutes to suppress legitimate democratic expressions and intimidate civil society.

The DMK leader called for the immediate, unconditional withdrawal of the baseless sedition charges, reaffirming the DMK's steadfast commitment to defending freedom of speech, pluralism, and intellectual liberty across the country.
