DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the sudden hike in user fees across toll plazas, terming the steep escalation an unjust burden on middle-class motorists, daily commuters, and commercial traders. He described the clandestine tariff increase without corresponding improvements in basic road maintenance as state-facilitated daylight extortion that hurts the regional economy.
Stalin pointed out that toll booth operators consistently collect exorbitant charges while failing to maintain road safety, lighting, ambulance services, or proper bypass facilities for local residents. He noted that higher toll tariffs escalate freight costs, directly inflating the retail prices of essential food commodities and manufacturing goods. The DMK leader criticized authorities for extending toll collection contracts indefinitely, even on stretches where capital investment costs had been recovered years earlier.
Demanding an immediate rollback of the toll revision, Stalin emphasized that highway infrastructure must facilitate public convenience rather than maximize private corporate profits. He urged the government to review toll plaza operations, ensure transparent auditing of collections, and exempt local commuters living adjacent to toll barriers. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will continue to mobilize public resistance against exploitative toll policies.
