Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin participated in a massive Cauvery delta farmers seminar in Thanjavur, where he urged the Union Government to utilize the Reserve Bank of India's surplus fund transfer of 1.76 lakh crore rupees to implement a comprehensive nationwide farm loan waiver. Addressing agrarian representatives, Stalin stressed that financial windfalls received by the central government must directly alleviate chronic indebtedness among distressed farming communities.

Stalin highlighted the acute hardships confronting farmers across the Cauvery delta region due to erratic monsoon cycles, inadequate river water releases, and escalating cultivation costs. He noted that former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had set a historic governance precedent by waiving seven thousand crore rupees of cooperative farm loans in 2006, proving that administrative compassion toward agriculture is both viable and necessary. Stalin criticized central authorities for prioritizing corporate debt write-offs while ignoring struggling cultivators.

He demanded that the central and state administrations restructure agricultural credit frameworks, ensure fair Minimum Support Prices, and provide immediate financial relief to prevent farmer distress. Stalin reiterated that the DMK will persistently advocate for agrarian rights until comprehensive debt relief is secured.
