Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin announced that Members of Parliament representing like-minded opposition parties would convene for a major public demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on August 22. The coordinated protest was organized to demand the immediate and unconditional release of political leaders, former chief ministers, and elected representatives detained indefinitely by the Union government across Jammu and Kashmir following the unilateral abrogation of special constitutional status.

Stalin emphasized that the prolonged detention of mainstream democratic leaders, combined with sweeping communication blackouts and stringent restrictions on civic movement, represents an unconstitutional assault on civil liberties. By disallowing political activity and keeping regional leadership isolated from their constituents, the Union administration violated foundational democratic conventions. Stalin underscored that true national integration cannot be achieved through coercive executive decrees or military encirclement, but rather through democratic consultation and mutual trust.

As a veteran party rooted in federalism and regional autonomy, the DMK took the initiative to mobilize diverse political parties on a unified national platform. Stalin declared that defending democratic rights in Kashmir is essential for preserving the federal character and constitutional integrity of the Indian republic.
