DMK president M.K. Stalin formally petitioned Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, demanding the immediate sanction of a comprehensive 1000 crore rupee reconstruction and rehabilitation package for disaster-stricken Nilgiris district. Stalin rejected the state government's preliminary allocation of 199 crore rupees as utterly inadequate, arguing that the token sum failed to capture the unprecedented magnitude of destruction caused by torrential monsoon rains, catastrophic landslides, and widespread flooding across the hill terrain.
Having personally conducted extensive on-site inspections alongside party legislators in devastated settlements, Stalin detailed the catastrophic losses suffered by tea estate workers, tribal communities, and small farmers. Multiple roads, bridges, power transmission lines, and residential quarters were pulverized, leaving hundreds of remote hamlets isolated without basic amenities. Stalin emphasized that restoring hill slopes, rebuilding destroyed houses, compensating devastated agrarian holdings, and providing sustainable livelihoods require substantial capital expenditure backed by scientific soil conservation measures.
Stalin urged the state administration to declare the Nilgiris disaster a severe natural calamity and petition the Union government for extraordinary federal financial assistance. He assured hill residents that DMK cadres would continue active ground relief operations until comprehensive rehabilitation is accomplished.
