Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin convened and chaired a crucial all-party meeting at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai, uniting diverse political parties to address the constitutional crisis following the Union government's unilateral abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting unanimously adopted a resolute declaration urging the central government to immediately constitute and dispatch a multi-party delegation of parliamentarians to Jammu and Kashmir to independently evaluate ground realities and engage directly with local residents.

Stalin pointed out that the Union administration had effectively silenced the entire population of Jammu and Kashmir through draconian security lockdowns, sweeping detentions of elected representatives, and an unprecedented communication blackout. He argued that true democratic governance requires transparency, consultation, and direct dialogue with affected citizens rather than reliance on unilateral executive decrees issued from New Delhi. Imposing major constitutional restructuring without consulting state stakeholders or their elected legislative representatives establishes a dangerous precedent that imperils the autonomy of all Indian states.

Stalin affirmed that the multi-party resolution reflects the collective democratic conscience of Tamil Nadu, which has historically championed state rights, cooperative federalism, and constitutionalism. He urged the Union government to accept the proposal and restore democratic liberties in Jammu and Kashmir immediately.
