DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Union Budget 2019 presented by the central government, characterizing it as a direct assault on the federal structure of the country and an economic burden on ordinary citizens. Stalin observed that the budget systematically centralizes key state subjects under slogans like One Nation One Ration Card, unified electricity grids, and standardized educational curricula, which collectively erode the constitutional autonomy of state governments.
He criticized the central government for prioritizing corporate concessions while offering bitter hardship to ordinary working families through steep excise hikes on petrol and diesel. Stalin pointed out that increasing fuel tariffs triggers widespread inflation, escalating transportation costs and commodity prices for rural and urban households alike. He expressed deep alarm over aggressive disinvestment and privatization initiatives, noting that public sector institutions built through taxpayer contributions are being handed over to private conglomerates without safeguarding public employment and social reservations.
Stalin affirmed that economic policies must strengthen grassroots welfare and decentralize financial authority rather than concentrate economic control in New Delhi. He pledged that DMK parliamentarians will vigorously oppose these centralizing fiscal measures and fight to protect regional autonomy.
