DMK president M.K. Stalin inaugurated a comprehensive rainwater harvesting initiative spanning one thousand locations across the Saidapet assembly constituency in Chennai to tackle acute urban groundwater depletion and drinking water shortages. Addressing community members, local volunteers, and civic workers, Stalin highlighted that long-term ecological sustainability and proactive water conservation must form the foundation of responsible civic governance.
Stalin criticized the state administration for ignoring Chennai's worsening water crisis until reservoirs ran dry, leaving millions of residents dependent on costly private water tankers. He pointed out that while the government remained passive, the DMK took direct community action by organizing localized water distribution and mobilizing citizens to construct rainwater harvesting structures. Stalin emphasized that restoring aquifer levels through scientific recharge wells and rooftop catchment systems is essential to insulate the metropolis from recurrent seasonal droughts.
He recalled that previous DMK administrations under former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had prioritized major water infrastructure projects, including seawater desalination plants and Veeranam drinking water pipelines. Stalin urged civic bodies and citizens to maintain rainwater structures diligently, reaffirming the DMK's enduring commitment to comprehensive public water security across Tamil Nadu.
