DMK welcomes the proposal to publish judgments of the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India in regional languages but is disappointed to note that Tamil is not one of them.

I request the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India to include Tamil and pave way for multilingual equality.

Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin welcomed the proposal by the Supreme Court of India to publish official vernacular translations of its landmark verdicts but expressed profound disappointment over the exclusion of Tamil from the initial list of regional languages. In a formal appeal to Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, Stalin requested the immediate inclusion of Tamil to guarantee genuine multilingual equality and facilitate fair judicial access for millions of Tamil-speaking citizens.

Stalin emphasized that Tamil is recognized as a classical language with millennia of literary and constitutional heritage, functioning as the official administrative language of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. He pointed out that legal proceedings and apex court pronouncements directly shape citizens' constitutional rights, civil liberties, and statutory entitlements. Restricting verdict translations to select northern and eastern languages while omitting prominent Dravidian languages alienates southern litigants and creates unacceptable linguistic disparities in judicial communication.

Stalin reiterated that judicial transparency requires institutional reforms that bring apex court jurisprudence closer to ordinary non-English-speaking people. He affirmed that the DMK will persistently advocate for equal status for Tamil across all central institutions and judicial benches.
