DMK president M.K. Stalin issued a blistering condemnation of the central government and corporate entities over ongoing plans to establish extensive hydrocarbon exploration projects across the ecologically fragile Cauvery delta. Stalin highlighted that the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation along with private conglomerate Vedanta had already obtained environmental clearance permissions for 341 extraction wells, while ONGC sought further approvals from central authorities to drill 104 additional commercial exploratory wells.
Stalin strongly criticized the ruling AIADMK government for remaining a mute spectator while Tamil Nadu's agricultural breadbasket is systematically endangered by petrochemical extraction. He pointed out that commercial hydrocarbon exploration involves intensive hydraulic fracturing, deep subsurface drilling, and severe soil contamination, which threaten to deplete subterranean aquifers and render millions of acres of fertile farmland barren. Stalin warned that delta farmers, who already grapple with unpredictable monsoon cycles and recurrent Cauvery water deficits, cannot withstand environmental degradation engineered by central directives.
Demanding an immediate halt to all hydrocarbon extraction projects in the Cauvery basin, Stalin called upon the state government to assertively cancel approvals. He pledged that the DMK will spearhead mass resistance to protect delta lands.
