DMK president M.K. Stalin expressed grave alarm over Karnataka's calculated maneuvers to construct a massive balancing reservoir across the Cauvery river at Mekedatu, warning that the project would permanently imperil Tamil Nadu's riparian survival. Stalin condemned the Karnataka administration for withholding Tamil Nadu's statutory monthly water allocations while advancing the unlawful premise that downstream flows will be released only after the Mekedatu dam is successfully constructed.
He pointed out that the central government has been surreptitiously facilitating Karnataka's designs by entertaining preliminary project feasibility studies in total violation of final judicial determinations. Stalin criticized the AIADMK administration for its sluggish and passive response, warning that continuous delay in mounting a decisive legal challenge severely compromises the state's legal advantage. He urged the state government to immediately file an urgent petition before the Supreme Court of India to obtain comprehensive restraining orders halting all surveying, planning, and construction activities at Mekedatu.
Stalin declared that the Cauvery river represents the economic lifeline of millions of Tamil farmers. He affirmed that the DMK will resolutely resist every unilateral upstream construction to defend Tamil Nadu's water sovereignty.
