DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Union government for filing a special leave petition before the Supreme Court of India challenging the landmark Madras High Court verdict that quashed land acquisition proceedings for the controversial Chennai-Salem eight-lane greenfield expressway. Stalin noted that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi had proclaimed that his newly sworn-in government would embrace everyone, the administration's very first action toward Tamil Nadu was this anti-farmer legal appeal filed on the day after taking office.
Stalin described the ruling AIADMK government as a submissive subservient partner that actively aided the central move against the state's own farming community. He highlighted that the proposed highway project would ruthlessly destroy thousands of acres of fertile agricultural land, demolish rural homes, fell valuable fruit-bearing trees, and ravage ecologically sensitive hill forests across five western districts. Stalin pointed out that the High Court had rightly nullified the project due to fraudulent environmental clearances and brutal police repression unleashed against peaceful farmers.
Demanding the immediate withdrawal of the central appeal, Stalin warned that the DMK will lead massive popular struggles alongside agrarian communities to prevent the forcible seizure of farmland.
