Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin observed May 22 as a dark chapter in Tamil Nadu's modern history, marking the solemn first anniversary of the brutal police firing in Thoothukudi that claimed the lives of thirteen peaceful protesters demanding the permanent closure of the polluting Sterlite copper smelting plant. Stalin paid sorrowful homage to the martyrs who lost their lives to state violence and expressed enduring solidarity with hundreds of injured citizens and grieving families who continue to endure physical and psychological trauma.

Stalin condemned the AIADMK state government for its callous failure to deliver justice, noting that even after a full year had elapsed, the administrative officials and police personnel responsible for ordering and executing the lethal gunfire had not faced criminal prosecution. He pointed out that rather than healing the wounds of Thoothukudi, the state administration subjected peaceful activists, local youth, and grieving relatives to relentless police intimidation and false criminal charges. Stalin highlighted that the victims' families were still awaiting truth, fair compensation, and institutional accountability.

Solemnly promising that justice will not be denied forever, Stalin affirmed that the DMK will relentlessly pursue legal accountability until guilty perpetrators are punished.
