Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the central Bharatiya Janata Party government and the state AIADMK administration for granting environmental clearance for hydrocarbon extraction projects across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Stalin termed the hasty clearance an egregious betrayal of the agrarian populace, pointing out that even during the final days of their tenure, the ruling regimes had colluded to inflict ecological damage on productive farmlands.

Stalin emphasized that hydrocarbon exploration posed an existential threat to the fertile Cauvery delta, often hailed as the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu. Deep exploratory drilling, hydraulic fracturing, and chemical discharge would deplete groundwater aquifers, salinize arable soils, and devastate the livelihoods of millions of farming families. Local communities had been protesting continuously against commercial exploitation of agricultural land without their consent. Stalin charged that the state government had completely surrendered the welfare of Tamil Nadu's farmers to satisfy the commercial interests of corporate oil conglomerates.

Stalin affirmed that the DMK would fight alongside farmers against destructive energy projects. He demanded the immediate revocation of all hydrocarbon exploration licenses to protect agricultural lands and ensure environmental sustainability.
