DMK president M.K. Stalin welcomed the Supreme Court's refusal to stay the Madras High Court judgment which affirmed that the Lieutenant Governor has no constitutional authority to interfere in the daily administration of Puducherry's elected government. Stalin stated that this judicial decision was a vital victory for democratic governance, establishing unequivocally that nominated gubernatorial heads cannot subvert the legitimate authority of an elected legislature and council of ministers.
Stalin emphasized that the Lieutenant Governor had repeatedly bypassed elected representatives, obstructed welfare policies, and conducted unauthorized administrative inspections, effectively creating an unconstitutional parallel administration. Such persistent overreach paralyzed governance in the Union Territory, inflicting severe hardship on ordinary citizens dependent on social welfare delivery. Stalin asserted that in a parliamentary democracy, executive authority resides with elected representatives answerable to the people, not nominated functionaries acting at the behest of the central ruling party. He demanded the immediate recall of the Lieutenant Governor for violating constitutional propriety.
Stalin reiterated that the DMK will persistently defend federalism and democratic decentralization. He urged the Union government to respect constitutional boundaries and allow elected state and territory administrations to function unhindered.
