Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to dismiss a petition challenging the proposed release of the seven life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Stalin stated that with the apex court's definitive ruling, all legal hurdles and procedural excuses had been eliminated, leaving the Governor of Tamil Nadu with no valid ground to delay implementing the state Cabinet's unanimous resolution.

Stalin emphasized that the seven individuals had languished in prison for nearly three decades, having endured prolonged incarceration far exceeding standard life sentences. The Tamil Nadu Cabinet had formally exercised its constitutional authority under Article 161 in September 2018, recommending their premature release on humanitarian grounds. Despite broad consensus across political parties and civil society, the Governor's prolonged inaction reflected unconstitutional hesitation. Stalin asserted that continuing to withhold approval undermined the federal rights of the state legislature and the executive authority of the elected government. He demanded that the Governor immediately issue the formal release order.

Stalin reaffirmed the DMK's steadfast commitment to securing humanitarian justice and defending state autonomy. He urged immediate executive action to end decades of emotional agony for the convicts and their families.
