DMK president M.K. Stalin launched a scathing attack on the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission, questioning whether the constitutional body possessed any independent authority or existed merely as a subservient wing functioning under the direct dictate of Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and Municipal Administration Minister S.P. Velumani. Stalin accused the ruling AIADMK dispensation of deliberately conspiring to evade conducting local body elections for nearly three years in order to loot thousands of crores in municipal and panchayat contract commissions.
Stalin explained that the indefinite postponement of local body polls had completely paralyzed grassroots democracy across Tamil Nadu. In the absence of elected mayors, ward councilors, and village panchayat presidents, bureaucratic special officers were deployed to execute centralized tenders without local oversight or transparency. This unconstitutional vacuum allowed ruling party ministers to monopolize civic infrastructure contracts and pocket massive kickbacks while basic municipal amenities like sanitation, road maintenance, and drinking water supply collapsed statewide.
Stalin demanded that the State Election Commission fulfill its constitutional duty independently by announcing municipal and panchayat election schedules without further delays or subservience to political masters.
