DMK president M.K. Stalin expressed serious public concern over the escalating confrontation between Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) management and its technical and operating employees, which pushed workers into staging indefinite protests. Stalin noted that when metro rail staff initially engaged in peaceful sit-in demonstrations highlighting legitimate workplace grievances, management acted with high-handed indifference, refusing meaningful dialogue and forcing employees to escalate their agitation onto the streets.
Stalin emphasized that the employees' demands—including fair wage revisions, permanent absorption of outsourced personnel, safety standards, and end to arbitrary disciplinary victimizations—warranted immediate, constructive conciliation rather than authoritarian threats of termination or suspension. He pointed out that Chennai Metro serves tens of thousands of urban office-goers, students, and daily commuters every single day. Prolonged labor unrest threatened to disrupt essential public transportation across Chennai, causing severe inconvenience to the commuting public during peak summer months.
Stalin urged the state government and CMRL management to abandon their obstinate stance, initiate immediate tripartite negotiations with recognized employee unions, and arrive at a fair, amicable resolution that protects workers' rights while ensuring uninterrupted metro train services for the public.
