DMK president M.K. Stalin welcomed the historic verdict delivered by the Madras High Court quashing land acquisition proceedings for the controversial 10,000-crore Chennai-Salem eight-lane greenfield expressway project. Stalin characterized the judicial order as a resounding death blow to Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami's autocratic government, which had ruthlessly trampled upon farmers' rights, suppressed dissent, and arrested peaceful demonstrators to serve corporate contractor interests.
Stalin posed a direct challenge to the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), whose leadership had previously filed writ petitions opposing the expressway project but subsequently entered into an unprincipled electoral alliance with the ruling AIADMK. Stalin demanded that PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss immediately clarify whether he could extract a binding written guarantee from Chief Minister Palaniswami promising that the state government would not appeal the High Court judgment in the Supreme Court. He asked whether PMK possessed the moral courage to quit the ruling alliance if the state filed an appeal.
Stalin affirmed that the DMK consistently stood alongside agitating farmers and environmentalists. He pledged that a DMK administration will safeguard fertile agricultural holdings and cancel destructive corridor projects.
