Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin addressed an energetic election campaign public meeting in Karur parliamentary constituency, campaigning for Secular Progressive Alliance candidate S. Jothimani of the Congress. Stalin drew attention to Karur's reputation as a globally renowned textile export hub, pointing out that local home textile manufacturers and handloom weavers were struggling due to unscientific GST slabs and demonetization.

Stalin condemned the state AIADMK government for administrative inertia, noting that local transport minister M.R. Vijayabhaskar had focused on personal enrichment rather than addressing civic infrastructure or industrial welfare. Untreated industrial effluents and stalled sewage treatment projects had heavily polluted the Noyyal and Amaravathi rivers, threatening agrarian livelihoods and contaminating drinking water supplies across the region. Stalin also criticized the state administration for failing to provide adequate power subsidies or assist small and medium enterprise exporters facing fierce international competition.

Stalin promised that a Secular Progressive Alliance government will streamline GST for textile goods, clean up degraded river basins, waive handloom debts, and build modern industrial trade centers in Karur. He appealed to voters to elect Jothimani by an overwhelming margin on April 18.
