DMK president M.K. Stalin addressed an extensive election campaign public meeting in Coimbatore parliamentary constituency, campaigning for Secular Progressive Alliance candidate P.R. Natarajan of the CPI(M). Stalin drew attention to Coimbatore's proud status as the Manchester of South India, highlighting that its vibrant engineering foundries, pump manufacturing plants, textile mills, and wet grinder clusters formed the industrial backbone of Tamil Nadu.
Stalin strongly condemned both the central BJP and state AIADMK governments for devastating this thriving industrial ecosystem through hasty demonetization and a punitive, convoluted GST regime. Hundreds of micro, small, and medium enterprises had closed down, throwing thousands of skilled industrial workers onto the streets. In addition, the AIADMK administration had allowed neighboring Kerala to obstruct Tamil Nadu's legitimate water rights in the Siruvani basin, worsening industrial and domestic water scarcity. Stalin highlighted that state ministers focused entirely on securing percentages from civic contracts rather than upgrading basic roads and industrial infrastructure.
Stalin pledged that a progressive government will rationalize GST rates for engineering goods, protect Siruvani water rights, and establish modern industrial estates. He urged Coimbatore to vote for the alliance.
