DMK president M.K. Stalin addressed an energetic election campaign rally in the Nilgiris parliamentary constituency, campaigning for former Union Minister and DMK candidate A. Raja. Stalin spoke on the pristine ecological heritage of the Nilgiris hill district, recalling that successive DMK administrations under Kalaignar Karunanidhi had established the Government Arts College, expanded INDCOSERVE cooperative tea factories, and protected indigenous tribal communities including Todas, Kotas, and Badagas.
Stalin highlighted the acute economic depression afflicting small tea growers across the hills due to plummeting green leaf purchase prices and rising production costs. The central BJP government and state AIADMK administration had utterly failed to establish a viable minimum support price for green tea leaves or provide subsidized fertilizers. Tea plantation laborers, predominantly women, were denied fair statutory minimum wages and decent housing amenities. Stalin also criticized the state administration for harassing local residents with arbitrary master plan building restrictions while allowing influential corporate resorts to violate hill station environmental regulations.
Stalin promised that a DMK government will fix a remunerative price for green tea leaf and empower indigenous hill communities. He urged voters to support the Rising Sun.
