DMK president M.K. Stalin launched a blistering condemnation against the AIADMK for its shameless hypocrisy regarding the Cauvery water dispute, questioning what moral qualification the ruling party possessed to speak about Tamil welfare while forming an electoral alliance with the BJP. Stalin pointed out that the Narendra Modi-led Central Water Commission had given formal approval to the Karnataka government for preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for constructing a massive dam across the Cauvery at Mekedatu, in blatant violation of the Supreme Court's final judgment.
Stalin charged that by partnering with the very central government that sanctioned the Mekedatu dam project, the Edappadi Palaniswami dispensation had committed treason against the farmers of the Cauvery delta. If constructed, the Mekedatu reservoir would turn the lush, fertile delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Tiruchirappalli into an arid desert, depriving millions of farmers of their sole lifeline. Yet, Chief Minister Palaniswami had timidly surrendered the state's riparian rights to save his personal office and avoid corruption probes.
Stalin called upon the electorate to decisively banish this treacherous ruling nexus in the upcoming elections.
