DMK president M.K. Stalin issued a strongly worded statement condemning the Election Commission of India for displaying blatant double standards in allocating electoral symbols for the 2019 Lok Sabha and assembly bye-elections. Stalin pointed out that while prominent political parties in the opposition alliance were arbitrarily denied their familiar, previously recognized election symbols, political outfits aligned with the BJP-AIADMK coalition were generously granted their preferred symbols even before formally submitting requests, despite some having lost official electoral recognition.
Stalin characterized this blatant institutional bias as nothing short of a cold-blooded murder of democratic fairness. An independent constitutional body tasked with ensuring free, transparent, and equitable electoral competition had instead reduced itself to an instrument serving the narrow political interests of the ruling dispensation. Stalin emphasized that such partisan maneuvers were specifically calculated to create administrative confusion among progressive voters and disadvantage opposition candidates in high-stakes constituencies. However, Stalin warned that the democratic electorate of Tamil Nadu saw clearly through these compromised institutional practices.
Stalin reaffirmed that no amount of bureaucratic favoritism or symbol denial could rescue the ruling alliance from imminent electoral defeat. He urged citizens to teach a lesson to authoritarian forces on April 18.
