Extending warm International Women's Day greetings to women across Tamil Nadu and the nation, DMK president M.K. Stalin affirmed the DMK's historic commitment to female empowerment and gender equality. Stalin announced that following the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, an anticipated change of regime would take place in New Delhi, and the progressive Union government formed with the decisive support of the DMK will enact the long-pending legislation providing thirty-three percent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislative assemblies.
Stalin traced the illustrious legacy of the Dravidian movement in spearheading women's emancipation. Under Thanthai Periyar's radical social vision, the self-respect movement dismantled oppressive patriarchal practices, championed remarriage for widows, and demanded equal property inheritance. In government, Muthamizharignar Kalaignar enacted the pathbreaking 1989 Hindu Succession (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act guaranteeing equal property rights for daughters, introduced thirty percent reservation for women in government jobs, established women self-help groups (SHGs), and reserved thirty-three percent of seats for women in local panchayats and municipal corporations.
Stalin pledged that the DMK will champion the Women's Reservation Bill until it is successfully enacted into law.
