Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin demanded that Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami immediately meet Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to secure the prompt release of the seven life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. Stalin noted that while the state cabinet had formally passed a resolution under Article 161 of the Constitution recommending their premature release months earlier, the Governor had kept the decision pending without justification.

Stalin pointed out that having finalized an electoral alliance with the ruling BJP—a party that consistently imposed anti-Tamil policies—Chief Minister Palaniswami had a moral and political obligation to leverage that alliance in state interest. He asked why the state government remained a passive spectator while the Governor delayed action, questioning whether Palaniswami had ever directly confronted the Union leadership on this humanitarian issue. Stalin emphasized that the seven individuals, including Perarivalan, had languished in prison for twenty-eight years, far exceeding statutory life terms.

Stalin asserted that the cabinet's recommendation represents the collective will of the people of Tamil Nadu. He called upon the Governor to sign the release order without further delay, ending decades of administrative indecision.
