DMK president M.K. Stalin challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prove his proclaimed concern for Tamil Nadu by immediately securing Presidential assent for the unanimous legislative bills seeking complete exemption for the state from the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). Stalin pointed out that with parliamentary elections approaching, Prime Minister Modi was making hollow promises to woo voters while callously ignoring the desperate pleas of Tamil Nadu's student community.
Stalin recalled that the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly had unanimously passed two historic bills in February 2017 to protect medical admissions for rural, Tamil-medium, and underprivileged state board students. However, the Union Home Ministry and the President's Secretariat had withheld assent for nearly two years without providing transparent reasons, directly leading to tragic student suicides, including that of Ariyalur student Anitha. Stalin lambasted the ruling AIADMK government led by Edappadi Palaniswami for cravenly pursuing an electoral pact with the BJP while failing to make the presidential approval of the anti-NEET bills a mandatory precondition for political alliance.
Stalin affirmed that the DMK will scrap NEET immediately upon forming a progressive Union government.
