Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin condemned the state AIADMK administration for continuing to display the name of former minister P. Balakrishna Reddy on the official Tamil Nadu government website, despite his criminal conviction and sentencing by a special court for elected representatives. Balakrishna Reddy had been convicted and sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment in a criminal riot case, which automatically disqualified him from legislative office under constitutional provisions and the Representation of the People Act.

Stalin noted that despite the court verdict, the state administration acted with shocking laxity by retaining his ministerial designation on official government portals. He characterized this conduct as an insult to judicial authority and an embarrassing display of executive impropriety. Stalin demanded that the government immediately purge his name from official state listings and formally notify the resulting legislative vacancy to the Election Commission of India.

Stalin further demanded that the legislative assembly secretariat officially declare the total number of vacant assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu as twenty-one. He urged the immediate scheduling of by-elections to uphold democratic accountability across all unrepresented constituencies without further unlawful delay.
