DMK president M.K. Stalin issued a strongly worded statement condemning the central BJP government's hasty move to introduce a ten percent reservation quota for economically weaker sections among forward castes, describing the policy as an outright assault on constitutional principles and social justice. Stalin emphasized that reservation was established by the founding fathers of the Indian Constitution as an affirmative action mechanism to remedy centuries of systemic caste oppression and social backwardness, not as a poverty alleviation scheme.
Stalin pointed out that the Supreme Court's historic nine-judge bench ruling in the landmark Indra Sawhney case explicitly held that economic criteria alone cannot form the basis for reservation and capped total reservations at fifty percent. He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of orchestrating a desperate electoral gamble at the end of his five-year tenure to consolidate upper-caste votes ahead of the general elections, callously jeopardizing the constitutional rights of Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes. Stalin highlighted that the BJP showed zero urgency in filling lakhs of vacant OBC and SC/ST backlog posts.
Stalin resolved that the DMK will spearhead nationwide legal and political resistance against this unconstitutional quota.
