DMK president M.K. Stalin urged the District Election Officer of Thiruvarur to conduct comprehensive, transparent consultations with all recognized political parties, key community leaders, and agricultural associations before submitting his official assessment to the Election Commission of India regarding the feasibility of holding the Thiruvarur assembly by-election. Stalin noted that democratic decisions concerning election schedules must take into account ground realities rather than bureaucratic whims.
Stalin highlighted that Thiruvarur and neighboring delta districts were still struggling to recover from the massive devastation wrought by Cyclone Gaja, which destroyed lakhs of coconut groves, damaged standing crops, and disrupted basic rural infrastructure. Imposing the Model Code of Conduct without proper preparation risked freezing vital relief disbursements, housing assistance, and crop compensation to destitute rural families. Stalin emphasized that the views of delta farmers, trade bodies, and political stakeholders were indispensable to ensuring fair and humane administrative conduct. He cautioned against any partisan reporting designed to suit the political convenience of the state government.
Stalin affirmed that the DMK was eager to face the electorate while prioritizing the legitimate welfare and recovery of cyclone-affected citizens.
