DMK president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin formally communicated his decision to boycott the high-level meeting convened to select the Chairperson and Members of the Tamil Nadu Lokayukta, addressing a comprehensive dissent letter explaining the ethical and legal grounds for his refusal to participate. Stalin pointed out that Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami, who himself faced grave corruption charges and High Court orders for an independent CBI investigation into highway contract scams, had engineered a deliberately weakened, toothless Lokayukta framework to shield himself and his cabinet colleagues.
Stalin emphasized that the statutory enactment passed by the state assembly subverted core principles laid down by the Supreme Court of India by denying the anti-corruption body independent investigating powers and excluding key executive decisions from its purview. Participating in a compromised selection process orchestrated by a tainted Chief Minister would amount to legitimizing a farce designed to deceive the public. Stalin demanded an empowered, autonomous Lokayukta endowed with independent investigative wings free from government control.
Stalin vowed that an incoming DMK government will repeal this flawed legislation and institute a robust, transparent anti-corruption institution.
