DMK president M.K. Stalin characterized the National Green Tribunal's order setting aside the closure of the Sterlite copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi as a supreme humiliation and historic disgrace for the ruling AIADMK government. Stalin asserted that the adverse judicial verdict had completely smeared black ink on the face of Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami, exposing how the state government deliberately sabotaged the legal case through shoddy administrative orders to aid corporate interests.
Stalin recalled that immediately after the horrific police firing that claimed the lives of thirteen peaceful anti-Sterlite demonstrators, the DMK had repeatedly demanded that the state cabinet convene and pass a formal policy decision under Article 162 of the Constitution to shut down the polluting plant permanently. Instead of enacting a legally sound policy, the state government issued a fragile, arbitrary administrative letter through the Pollution Control Board that was easily overturned in court. Stalin criticized the Chief Minister for ignoring expert legal advice and betraying the sacred sacrifices of the martyrs of Thoothukudi.
Stalin demanded that the state government immediately reform its approach, adopt a binding cabinet policy decision, and challenge the tribunal's order vigorously in the Supreme Court.
