DMK president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin addressed the Special Session of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly convened to oppose Karnataka's unilateral proposal to construct a massive balancing reservoir at Mekedatu across the Cauvery river. Stalin extended the DMK's full support to the government resolution demanding the immediate withdrawal of feasibility study permissions granted by the Central Water Commission, affirming that defending Tamil Nadu's riparian rights on Cauvery was an uncompromised civilizational duty.
However, Stalin did not mince words in exposing the severe administrative lethargy and political failures of the AIADMK government in preventing this crisis. He pointed out that while Karnataka was actively formulating project reports, the state government had failed to monitor central clearances vigilantly or secure judicial injunctions in a timely manner. In addition, Stalin highlighted the blatant double standards of the central Bharatiya Janata Party government, which facilitated Karnataka's illegal designs to gain political mileage in that state while trampling upon the final verdict of the Supreme Court and the Cauvery Water Management Authority.
Stalin asserted that the DMK will spearhead uncompromising struggles to prevent any construction at Mekedatu.
