DMK president M.K. Stalin paid tearful, solemn homage to the departed champion of indigenous agriculture and traditional seed conservation, "Nel" R. Jayaraman, placing a floral wreath on his mortal remains and offering deep personal condolences to the bereaved family members. Stalin recalled how Jayaraman, following the footsteps of organic farming pioneer Nammalvar, dedicated his entire lifespan to reviving, preserving, and popularizing over 170 forgotten traditional paddy varieties across Tamil Nadu through annual seed festivals at Adirangam.
Stalin highlighted that Jayaraman's grassroots mission was not merely agricultural work, but a vital ecological and cultural resistance against chemical-dependent farming, multinational seed monopolies, and the systemic degradation of agricultural soil. His tireless efforts in training thousands of young farmers in native seed multiplication protected farming households from ruinous input costs and conserved drought-resistant crops suitable for climate resilience. Stalin asserted that the most meaningful and enduring tribute the state can render to Jayaraman's memory is to actively practice, support, and expand natural farming methods that protect soil fertility.
Stalin pledged that an incoming DMK government will institutionalize state support for indigenous seed banks and organic farming revival.
