Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin expressed profound outrage over the clandestine moves by the Edappadi Palaniswami administration to scuttle and quash the criminal First Information Report (FIR) registered in connection with the notorious eighty-nine crore rupee cash-for-votes scandal during the RK Nagar assembly by-election. Stalin characterized the state government's covert action as a brazen assault on the rule of law and an unpardonable insult to the constitutional authority of the Election Commission of India and the Madras High Court.

Stalin recalled that income tax raids on the properties of Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar had yielded documented ledger sheets detailing widespread distribution of currency to voters, implicating Chief Minister Palaniswami and several senior cabinet colleagues. Rather than conducting an impartial investigation into systemic electoral bribery that caused the rescission of the by-election in April 2017, the state police machinery was coerced into burying the case to protect high-ranking political masters. Stalin demanded the immediate initiation of criminal proceedings against all conspirators and insisted that the investigation must be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation under High Court monitoring.

Stalin asserted that the DMK will persistently fight through judicial forums to ensure zero tolerance for electoral corruption.
