DMK president M.K. Stalin joined heads and representatives of all major secular political parties, farmers' organizations, and civil society groups in leading a massive, united protest demonstration against the central Bharatiya Janata Party government for granting permission to Karnataka to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for constructing a balancing reservoir at Mekedatu across the Cauvery river. Stalin declared that the central government's unilateral action constituted a grave betrayal of Tamil Nadu's legitimate riparian rights.

Stalin emphasized that the proposed Mekedatu reservoir, designed with a massive storage capacity of sixty-seven thousand million cubic feet, was an illegal project calculated to choke the natural flow of water into Tamil Nadu. He pointed out that granting preliminary approvals violated the final judgment delivered by the Supreme Court of India and bypassed the mandatory oversight of the Cauvery Water Management Authority. Stalin criticized the central BJP leadership for sacrificing the survival of delta farmers to advance partisan electoral ambitions in Karnataka, while calling out the AIADMK administration's meek compliance.

Stalin affirmed that the united opposition will intensify public agitation until the Centre revokes all clearances for Mekedatu.
