#SterliteCopper
DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly criticized the Tamil Nadu government for its administrative lethargy in handling the closure of the Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi, asserting that state negligence directly caused the ongoing legal complications. Stalin pointed out that the AIADMK administration issued hasty, legally fragile administrative orders without creating a robust statutory foundation. This failure allowed corporate polluters to challenge the shutdown before judicial tribunals and obtain favorable interim recommendations.
Stalin emphasized that the prolonged shutdown struggle in Thoothukudi represents the democratic will of local communities who suffered severe health hazards and environmental pollution. The loss of thirteen civilian lives in police firing demanded an unshakeable, watertight policy decision through a cabinet meeting and legislative enactment. Instead, official indifference and procedural lapses weakened the state's case, jeopardizing public safety and environmental welfare.
Stalin demanded that the state government immediately correct its course and mount a dedicated, transparent legal battle in the Supreme Court. He stated that the administration must deploy senior constitutional experts to defend the closure order, enforce environmental regulations rigorously, and uphold the legitimate concerns of Thoothukudi residents who steadfastly oppose the smelter's reopening.
