DMK president M.K. Stalin described the National Green Tribunal committee's recommendation permitting the Sterlite Copper plant to resume operations under conditional terms as an embarrassing setback for the Tamil Nadu government. The three-member panel headed by former high court chief justice Tarun Agrawala submitted that the administrative order closing the Thoothukudi unit lacked proper statutory justification. Stalin asserted that this adverse finding directly vindicated his repeated warnings that mere executive orders would fail judicial scrutiny.
Stalin recalled that he had consistently urged the state administration to convene a special cabinet meeting and adopt a formal policy resolution backed by state legislation. Instead, the ruling AIADMK government relied on temporary administrative notices that could not withstand appellate challenges by Vedanta. He noted that official incompetence had compromised the hard-won democratic resistance of Thoothukudi citizens and disregarded the memory of thirteen unarmed protesters killed in state police firing.
Stalin demanded that the Tamil Nadu government reject the committee's report immediately and adopt an unequivocal legislative enactment to ensure permanent closure. He emphasized that protecting public health and ecological safety must override corporate interests in Thoothukudi.
