DMK president M.K. Stalin criticized the Tamil Nadu government for passive negligence after the Union government approved Karnataka's feasibility report to construct a new dam at Mekedatu across the Cauvery river. Stalin asserted that New Delhi granted this approval deliberately to undermine Tamil Nadu's agricultural interests. He questioned why the state administration remained inactive while Karnataka pursued clearance from the Central Water Commission, allowing neighboring authorities to advance construction plans uncontested.
Stalin emphasized that the chief minister must move beyond ceremonial correspondence and administrative petitions. Writing routine letters to central ministries while critical river rights are being signed away represents an abdication of executive responsibility. He insisted that the Tamil Nadu government must immediately approach the Supreme Court to secure a comprehensive stay order halting all preparatory operations, feasibility studies, and detailed project documentation related to Mekedatu.
Stalin warned that constructing a reservoir at Mekedatu would effectively choke water supply to the Mettur reservoir, plunging delta farmers into permanent drought. He affirmed that the DMK will organize coordinated statewide resistance until the central government revokes its clearance and safeguards Tamil Nadu's riparian entitlements.
