DMK president M.K. Stalin criticized the Tamil Nadu government following the Supreme Court's dismissal of its review petition regarding the closure of the Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi. Stalin described the judicial rejection as a classic demonstration of how public interest litigation should never be handled by an elected administration. He held the chief minister and senior cabinet ministers directly responsible for the legal setback, noting that their reluctance to formulate a coherent policy framework severely compromised the case.
Stalin recalled that throughout the anti-Sterlite movement, the opposition repeatedly urged the state government to convene a formal cabinet meeting and enact a statutory policy decision to close the polluting industrial unit permanently. Instead of adopting constitutional safeguards, ruling ministers dismissed opposition counsel, relying on fragile administrative notifications that could not withstand appellate scrutiny in apex judicial forums.
Stalin emphasized that official ineptitude directly insults the democratic aspirations of Thoothukudi residents who endured police brutality and lost thirteen lives during peaceful protests. He urged the administration to stop executing cosmetic legal maneuvers and adopt a decisive legislative enactment defending public health and ecological preservation.
