DMK president M.K. Stalin appealed to Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami to cease political polemics and focus constructive energies on addressing agrarian distress in the wake of Cyclone Gaja. Reacting to the chief minister's press statements in New Delhi attacking opposition parties while seeking central disaster assistance, Stalin emphasized that an unprecedented humanitarian crisis demanded governance maturity rather than partisan confrontation.
Stalin highlighted the tragic death of two delta farmers who committed suicide following total ruin of their standing crops and coconut orchards. He noted that widespread agricultural devastation, accumulated farm loans, and delayed state compensation had driven vulnerable rural cultivators to absolute despair. Instead of deflecting accountability, the state administration must treat farmer suicides as an urgent emergency, dispatching counseling teams and announcing immediate debt moratoriums and cash grants.
Stalin urged the government to mobilize administrative machinery across damaged rural districts on a war footing. He stressed that securing adequate central funds, restoring electricity infrastructure, and providing comprehensive crop compensation must take precedence over political rhetoric, assuring that the opposition remains committed to supporting genuine public relief endeavors. Stalin pledged that the opposition will continue extending full cooperation to all genuine relief operations.
