DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly criticized the Union Bharatiya Janata Party government for failing to release even preliminary emergency funds to Tamil Nadu following the severe devastation caused by Cyclone Gaja. Stalin pointed out that while the southern boundary of the nation suffered unprecedented ecological and infrastructural destruction, the central administration displayed characteristic apathy by withholding urgent financial liquidity needed for ground rescue and restoration.
Stalin recalled that during previous natural disasters including Cyclone Vardah and Cyclone Ockhi, the central government drastically slashed Tamil Nadu's legitimate relief demands, disbursing negligible fractions of estimated damages. He asserted that treating a major natural calamity with bureaucratic indifference insults the federal compact and leaves cash-strapped state authorities incapable of compensating affected farmers, fishermen, and rural households effectively.
Stalin demanded that the central government shed its step-motherly attitude toward Tamil Nadu and immediately sanction comprehensive disaster relief without procedural delays. He emphasized that rebuilding damaged electrical grids, compensating millions of fallen coconut trees, and providing permanent housing to uprooted families requires substantial fiscal allocations that the Centre must provide as a constitutional duty. He warned that denying legitimate disaster relief undermines cooperative federalism.
